One hundred and 23 years ago, gentle reader, a brave and unnamed Washington Post reporter investigated D.C.’s burgeoning pie-making industry by visiting the city’s largest pie-making establishment.

The ensuing report, published June, 23, 1889, had in its sixth paragraph one of the great all-time quotes in journalism: "Show me a child that don’t crave cherry pie," the shop manager said, "and I will show you a freak."
